STEP 2

Now go through the color harmonies described in Color Knowledge and consider whether this results in an initial color combination (with two to three other colors) that appeals to you. If not, you can create your own color card with all your watercolor shades. Your aim is to decide on two or three matching colors in addition to your chosen starting color.

STEP 3

You now have a total of three to four colors, which are your basis for further selection. Experiment in this step with the selected watercolor paints and see how the colors with high transparency and high opacity look on watercolor paper when dried. Also, try to darken and lighten each color, as described in Tonal Range, Transparency, Opacity, creating new shades and nuances. Try mixing your original colors with the three primary colors (red, yellow and blue); you’ll be surprised by the shades created.

 TIP: Note on each paint area, what colors you’ve added, how you’ve lightened them or what colors you’ve darkened them with, as a record to remix them later as required.
